Svitlana Holovko www.modelmayhem.com/3139021/ As my wife, you are my most favorite photographer of all times. We do most of our photo shoots together and when everyone else fails to show up, you are next to me, mainly with Gary besides you. Lana has a great eye for photography and beautiful things. The only thing that is advisable is, that Lana to wear glasses when she shoots, than her images are sharp, clear and have composition and style in them. Lana loves to shoot videos and obviously is far more superior to me in shooting ladies and kids, Lana has a great connection with her subjects. 2. Valeriy Gerasymov Came originally from Ukraine, not that far from Odessa, is my neighbor, whom I recently met on the street making pictures of his daughter Valerya, with his lovely wife Lyudmila. Valery and his family are recent, a year old adventure living in Brooklyn and Valeriy has an eye for photography and people. I like working with Valeriy, he is open to conversation and eager to create his American photography portfolio. That is what we do together with Valery. Valery has been a photographer and film maker for a while back home. Valery daughter Valeriya is stoning inspiring child model of the age of 13 and are in search of the agency to represent her interest. Nikolai is often shares his photography with publications like New York Times, NY Post and other major publications. Mission of your photography Why do you photograph, what is the purpose of the photography for you? In my case, I want to make money making pictures, art peace comes a bit second for most photographers that is the opposite way that is why I am writing this not and you are reading it. 2. Lenses Choosing what lenses to use and where is important. We use long lenses to shoot from the distance. We choice micro lenses to shoot small objects, there are portrait lenses. 3. Cameras Choices between what camera to use is a choice for you Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Leika, Sony etc. 4. How to shoot? Hold camera steady. Perhaps use tripod, if needed use flash or remote flash. When subject is in the center of the focus press the button firmly 5. Useful advice Do not break your camera, do not shoot against the sun, you may rune your lenses sensor. 6. Learn to take pictures of the tall people To be at their height, we subject smaller in comparison and if you want to diminish the difference than have another person to stand on something to work with the difference in height. 7. Shooting speed At the events like wedding some times shooting need to be done fast when the bride through her flowers or at the sport events. 8. Removal of the red eye Cold be done on the computer or on the camera depends if your camera supports such an action. 9. Cleaning camera With soft cloth, if you had sand in the camera from the beach use air to take it out. Bring the camera to professional or watch a video on youtube.com on the proper topic. 10.Setting special space at the photo shoot where to put down cameras between shoots, so your hands gets some rest and your camera does not get brokenPhotography and Film Making 2014 Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 skype Alexander.Gurman 11.Sign your equipment because I guarantee you Nikon did not produce just one camera, there other people who have exact same cameras as you and some times they think that your camera is theirs and you might think that their camera or lenses is yours. To remove doubt and clarify things, sign yours so you would know it is your and you can prove it to others. 12.Discuss difference between raw format and jpeg In the RAW format you can work with fundamental file that is bigger in size and could be altered in more ways than just jpeg file. RAW is the file that you send to retouch people. 13.Image enhancement There are programs like photo shop and people like retouch people who do that for us. Most of the information that you can be interested already put out online and major recourse is youtube.com, use it for the updated data. 14.Trimming movies You can cut un necessarily stuff from before and after useful seconds and minutes of what you record and than you can put it together so it would have continuation effect. 15.Storing photos I would recommend to store on DVD disks with iron protection against scratches as well as have on remote hard drive that you can also double copy 16.Printing your images There are always local stores and variety of the online places to print like Walgreens, walmart, vistaprint and etc They all compete in price and quality, if I will have more time I will extend this section for the sites that I use and for the purposes. You can do some research and find what you like. 17.Image area 18.ISO 19.Exposure 20.Shutter From now fast it close it’s lets more or less light in the lenses. 21.How to hold camera Hold camera steady, do not shake camera during the shoot. 22.Colors 23.Skylight 24.Looking at the view finder 25.Blossom To shoot the sprint time, that is beautiful effectPhotography and Film Making 2014 Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 skype Alexander.Gurman 26.Night photos Require usually long exposure and steady hands or tripod and hign ISO 27.Beach photos Be careful with the sand in the lenses and water in the camera. I have killed that way a few cameras and would advice utmost to be careful with camera, have camera strap over your neck at all times. 28.Snow photos It would blurry your shoot, look at the manual for the best position. 29.Candle photos Shooting fire is and candle light has specific instructions in most of the current cameras, use it. 30.Dust and dawn photos The most beautiful pictures that you can take are taken with the side sun light at dust and dawn, again there are specific instructions for your camera that to use than, apply them. 31.Autumn colors Make your colors vivid and that would give you terrific colors. 32.Shooting food It should have a felling that food is fresh, with smoke and shine. Try to have good light and have 3d feel to it 33.Savings settings and taking notes for the shoots. Whenever you took a good picture, try to write settings that you apply so you and others can repeat your picture or help you to improve the picture in the future. 34.Reasons why to be a photographer Fun, money, meeting new people, creating legacy and memories 35.Reasons why to be a film maker. Fun, money, meeting new people, creating legacy and memories 36.Photography philosophy My photography philosophy is that it has to be cost effective, I for example use one camera at a time and once versatile lenses 18-200 mm that allows me to capture decent close ups and decent distance models shoots, I do not spend time for changing lenses or cameras, I respect model time and shoot fast what is required. My philosophy is to make the most money for everyone involve in the shoot at the least amount of expense and time. Once shoot demonstrate its profitability, meaning for example that product starts to sell thanks to the pictures produced from the shoot better than we can improve the shoot. Better models,Photography and Film Making 2014 Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 skype Alexander.Gurman better equipment, better photographer, better location, better techniques and etc. otherwise I do not think that everything has to be perfect from the first shoot because if idea of the shoot is fraudulent in the first time, even great photo shoot would not change the fact that product is shit and would not sell even with the best of everything else. Very much heartless business approach, I know, but I look at the shoot here only from the business point of view here and that is how I feel now. You, on the other hand may have another perception, more soft and artistic, but trust me when you will have two kids and wife at home who needs new shoes, you will think about money first and art later on. 37.Photography at the corporate events Usually does not pay much. Getting jobs very much depends on who do you know and what is your cost. Jobs goes to people who are close to the event organizers and who are relatively affordable or the least expensive. If there is no connection was established prior. Shooting is fast and one main photo camera and one video camera is required. Has to be mobile, light weight of the equipment matters. Choosing the right spot to shoot from is very important. Corporate people do not like to pay for the work, which means that you have to get a deposit upfront and try to get money before turning the work or at the time of exchange, otherwise you will probably never see the money. Checks bounce, phone calls are not return and outright harassments are common. Be prepared to stand your ground in the legal court that is why you would need a written contract prior to the job. You need to take the picture of portrait size of each guest and also in groups. Try to remember names and collect business cards of people at the event so you can get referrals later on, and of course try to have as many your business cards to give out, so people can hire you from the guest list. Before giving the pictures put your name on each picture and also have your name in camera settings, that way you can control how authentic is the picture. Try to negotiate not to give out RAW files, just JPEG, first of all that is space on the disks and time for you to burn them, now they are quite big and take long time to burn and lots of space to store. If you lucky and you shoot something interesting, you might later on sell that elsewhere. You can spot a great background and great subject or property peace that you might want to use for stock photography or for other jobs, for the video editing. Must have shoots a. When everyone walks in, of course you have to set and ready prior guest arrival for that, if the budget allows try to come early than, but use that time wisely and do some useful work for you, practice with your camera, do some hand shaking marketing. b. Shoot ceremony or award give out process. c. Shoot the boss with everyone. d. Shoot some food, and liquor, they might want that picture, shoot decorations.Photography and Film Making 2014 Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 skype Alexander.Gurman e. If there females at the party, make sure you shoot some sexy images that boss might be pleased with, but do not embarrassed anyone. You do not want to be sued by any of the guests. 38.How to get serious accounts as photographer in creative way a. Give out cards on the street when you see fancy dressed people or with fancy cars. b. Advertise in un usual places. c. Look professional, has serious equipment d. Behave like you are the winner and best photographer e. Ask for business from serious accounts f. Attend shareholder meetings to give out your card g. Have a great website h. Send emails to key decision makers i. Call and offer your service j. Be available and stay in contact with potential clients. k. 39.Current cameras range The first basic camera set up that I would recommend currently is Nikon D7100 with 18-200 lenses with wireless transmission That allows you to post videos and pictures almost instantly online and in some jobs that is very crucial. 40.Current standards For retouch people RAW format is a must JPEG simple and easy to give out to models HI Definition video is currently the standard. 41.What is expected from photographer today Many pictures, proper light, perhaps wireless flash, submit work online via drop box or DVD’s, being professional with business card, website, easy contact access. 42.What to do to make people smile Tell a joke, ask to smile, make a joke, pretend to flip, bring a toy that adults do not expect from you 43.Jokes to make people smile 44.Photographer inside jokes 45.Film Maker inside jokesPhotography and Film Making 2014 Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 skype Alexander.Gurman 46.What to say to make people look surprise in the picture, create emotion. - Do you know if that we have revolution? 47.Bring extra battery, extra flash Always bring extra battery for camera, extra memory and extra flash, you never know when this stuff fails and you do not want to lose a job because of it. Test your equipment before the shoot. 48.Storing and caring cameras on you Have extra bags to protect from moister, have extra cloth and bubbles to protect from bumps. Have leash over your neck at all times, when you put camera down make sure the space is clean and steady and camera would not have a chance to fall or someone flip over the camera. Where bright colors so others can see you and not flip over you when you on your knees taking pictures. 49.Protecting cameras Protect from being on the sun, protect from heat. Protect from cold in the car or when you outside shoot in the cold, let the camera to warm up. 50.Fighting the competition There are proper way of fighting and not so much. Proper way is never to tell lie about competitor, always be professional, let the competition look not professional, have your references in line available. 51.Check list what to take to photo shoot 1. 2. Useful forms attached a. Model Release b. 2257 form c. Photographer contract for weddings d. Property Release e. Assistant Photographer contract f. Fashion designer contract g. Photo shoot property lease contract h. Product Placement contract i. Photo shoot outline template j. Contracts with modeling agencies. 3. Business of photography Business of photography is a chapter by bellow. 4. Photography jokesPhotography and Film Making 2014 Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 skype Alexander.Gurman 5. Landscape photography You probably need to travel a lot for that, you need different time of the day and year for different pictures, you might want special lenses for that. You might need a good tripod. 6. Product photography. You might need a few lights on the sides, different backgrounds, you might need a box to shoot small objects, and white background is a must for product photography for amazon.com. You might need a tripod for the steady pictures. You might need a model to make pictures of the cloth for the amazon.com, you might need a manikin for the pictures to sell on ebay.com. too large files needs to be resized for the amazon.com and ebay.com. if you put pictures online for websites, pictures need to be properly cropped and resized for easy downloads. For the big posters you might want to shoot at first in RAW format and than with retouch people or skills improve the file. 7. Useful links, where to sell photography If you type in google.com search stock photography, you will see who are the leading websites and places to sell stock photos. Open accounts in each place and start selling. You can sell your images on amazon.com and on ebay.com You can sell via your own website. 8. Stock photography Make sure you put your name on the image and do not send original files 9. Where to buy photography equipment www.bandh.com www.amazon.com www.costco.com www.jandr.com www.uniquephoto.com 10.Must have equipment Camera, extra battery and extra memory, bag to carry. 11.Modeling agencies There is a list of those in this book bellow. 12.Choosing your equipment What you can easily afford, do not break the bank, once you make more money with photography you can buy more equipment. Equipment could be rented from places like b and h, so do not buy too much, most of the equipment get’s older too fast.Photography and Film Making 2014 Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 skype Alexander.Gurman 13.Lenses I think Nikon has great lenses, look for original stuff. 14.Camera body 15.Choosing between Nikon, Canon, Sony etc They all are pretty the same, I like Nikon for the reasons 1. I get used to them. 2. Good name. 3. easy to use ports 4. compatible with other brands (Sony is in trouble here) 5. I think Sony is better position in video cameras than in photo cameras. 16.Video post card making for the New Year One of the things that you can do to make a bit extra money is to make a video post cards for people to send to their families for holidays. You may need a good background or backdrop, and person with text what to say and some lights, and your video camera. 17.Use of tripod Not allowed in NYC subway for example to use, but can use mono pods. Helps to free hands and if camera it heavy makes your life easier. Makes your movements more bulker, necessary for landscape and distance shoots. 18.Use of flash Brings light to your pictures where you want it. Face flash flatten the picture, could cause over exposure. Flash has limitations, can not flash major objects like statue of liberty of big tower. Could use remote and many wireless flashes. 19.Aperture 20.Use of the remote control Quite useful if you want to be in the picture as well and there is no one else around to shoot all of you. Current model of Nikon D7100 allows to use your smart cell phone as remote control even to see the screen and press shoot button. 21.When you give out your work and use disks to give work, please do not put any paper on the disk because shortly over time this paper will stack inside the cd player and your customers would not be happy, even the best glue gets damage after a while. Just write on disk a little but do not glue to disk any label.Photography and Film Making 2014 Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 skype Alexander.Gurman 22.Delivering work remotely via drop box Is a great way to save time on small projects and makes you look professional if the shoot ordered from another country or another city and you and your client do not have time or ability to meet that is a great way to communicate. Just make sure that you are getting paid first. Make sure you use the proper address, you do not want to send your work to strangers. Where to sell your pictures Stock photography websites, Ebay.com, amazon.com, publications, designers, real estate agents to promote properties, owners of the properties that do catering for weddings, models who need portfolio, boyfriends and husbands who want memories of their wife’s and girlfriends. Backdrop companies. A book like Photographer market has 2. Stock photography There are quite a few of them with few major easily to find on google.com get an accounts on each that is free and start selling, off course sell also from your website. 3. How I sell my pictures I see to people who have need like I stated above, to designers, to business owners who need to advertise their products with models, to real estate agents and owners who need to promote there properties. 4. Contracts with Models Model release is attached, if 2257 form involve that one also had to be signed. Provide each model with photo shoot outline and give them contract to sign. 5. Contracts with other photographers Contract is attached, most important topics are responsibility, what if photographer will not show up, penalties, who owns the images produced and how the images can be used and stored. 6. Contracts with fashion designers Sample contract, that I use is attached, Have the contract spell out conditions what happens to the pictures, when you have to give pictures, what happens if pictures would not be satisfactory to designer desires. 7. Contracts with hair and make up professionals Again contract sample is attached here. Spell out remedies and responsibilities. 8. Contracts with real estate people Because renting locations is expensive, it is best to get real estate agents or properties owners who would give you their location and money to shoot and than you can give them some files with their property for advertising purposes. 9. Contract with property release Is attached, some times when you shoot at interesting location you need a permission to publish pictures as well as when you shoot interesting furniture 1Photography, Film Making, Making a living Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 Skype Alexander.Gurman subject or dog or cat, you would need property release contract to be able to use those pictures for commercial purposes. 10.Contract to use location Here is the attached contract sample that I create for myself. It’s discuss if you pay for the use of location or the owner of the location pays you and if property get damaged who pays and the ownership of the pictures produced. 11.Form 2257 Form 2257 is named in owner of the paragraph that discusses photography of nude and implied pictures. It is the law that is especially strict in state of NY, protecting rated photography that discusses how pictures are stored and used. Pictures have to lock in the volt, not to be available for use by not intended purposes. Make sure that models are of age and proper documentation is in place and remedies for not following the agreement. 12.Wedding photography contract Contract is attached, very important contract, discuss deposit, remedies if the photographer will not come, or not perform, or if wedding get canceled, or what happens if photographers get sick and who will be replacement photographer. Contract is needed for couple protection as well as for protection of the photographer. 13.Wedding film making contract Everything from the previous paragraph applies here as well and in addition it’s also discuss production of the film, one thing is to talk about raw tape recorded and another is about made film. It’s also discuss financial obligations on both parties conditions 14.Re touch people contract This contract sample discusses how to give precise direction what do you want to be done in the photos that you submit and conditions how it done, time fashion and who will own what part of the picture and when the money will change hands hand how. 15.Modeling agencies for adults Its sounds fancy when you get to say that you are represented by the agency especially if the agency is known and it is an exclusive contract. You drastically reduce your opportunity to be discovered when you position yourself from the top like that because you get to see much fewer offers and may miss great opportunity. You can always raise the price for your work if you see there is room for it but you can not do anything about missed opportunities when you where not even invited to the shoot. Shoots that look for professional models are quite competitive and brutal so competitions there are way tougher. Good luck their. You will probably book less shoots with big bucks and you can do more with smaller money but you can get more exposure. Who to say that you can not book 2Photography, Film Making, Making a living Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 Skype Alexander.Gurman expensive shoots as well as simple, the key is to stay busy and visible and to do a lot of work so you get notice nationally and internationally. 16.Modeling agencies for children Business there is mostly depends on parents activities, that parents send out their kid flier to as many places as they can and take kids to many castings and to be on top of the town and local possibilities. It is mostly lots of work for parents. 17.Negotiating a deal Into the deal there are few factors that come into consideration: your selling power, how many credits have you done before and what have you been paid before, what the party is willing to pay you, how much competition do you have with other models, photographers, how urgent is the contact, how much the other party trust you. 18.Explanation why we charge what we charge a. Why the price per hour is over $50.00 per hour b. We need to charge batteries, it takes time to set up and wait until batteries are charged and at that time shooting is not possible or need to have more batteries. Total about 5 minutes at least c. Clean memory cards and check that they are working before the shoot. It takes time depends case by case from 5 minutes to an hour of passive time d. Charge battery and clean memory card after the shoot – half an hour of passive time at least e. Create back up on the computer and back up disk – half an hour of passive time at least f. Pack equipment, check tripods check the check list of what is needed for this particular shoot. At least 15 minutes of active time g. We do equipment maintenance and it takes time also that you as a customer does not see. Half an hour at least of active time h. We spend time purchasing replacement or upgrade equipment. Hours of active time that could be spread in cost between many shoots but still time that had to be spent. i. We need to have more equipment than what we use in case something breaks and needs replacement on the spot. Additional expense that you do not see unless it’s get in work, but money have to spend. j. We need time research the new equipment before we purchase it. It’s takes also time. k. We need to learn new equipment before using at the shoot, that also takes time. Hours of active time that cost could be spread out. l. I would recommend to use bubbles when you transport your cameras, do not let it fall or get water inside. Make sure you work with clean space so your lenses would not get scratched. If you shooting at the beach where is windy and sand is flying, be sure to cover camera. Protect cameras from extreme heat, do not leave on hot weather cameras in the car. Also protect against cold when you shoot in the winter. Protect your lenses from direct light in the shutter. 24.Product Placement contract Contract with the owners of particular product that you shoot and then they can use it for the advertisement of product. Make sure you discuss if product owners get the originals and your name gets kept for the credit reasons. 4Photography, Film Making, Making a living Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 Skype Alexander.Gurman 25.Photo shoot outline template I have include a few photo shoot outline samples, to show what I measure and pay attention during the photo shoot. We discuss here What models have to bring with them Remedies for not show up Location of the shoot Who will participate? Finances of the shoot and conditions when who get paid What pictures would be taken, description of the pictures Time and duration of the shoot 26.Contracts with modeling agencies. This contract discusses conditions when agency and models are getting paid. What you as project owner require and what you are looking and all the conditions around it. 27.Stock photography There are major websites and companies that do stock photography, you can see list attached with most prominent at the end of the book. 28.Modeling agencies for kids 29.When you give out your work and use disks to give work, please do not put any paper on the disk because shortly over time this paper will stack inside the cd player and your customers would not be happy, even the best glue gets damage after a while. Just write on disk a little but do not glue to disk any label. 30.Delivering work remotely via drop box When you have your client that orders a shoot from other places and travel time is an essence you can deliver your work and receive assignment via drop box services. Many of drop box sites are free or quite affordable. The only down side of the deal is that it takes long time to upload and download large film files in full hd. Also for the old times who are not that familiar with current technology it takes time to learn how to download and upload files. 31.Real time life feed on youtube.com or to overseas Many cameras nowadays offer the opportunity to upload pictures and videos in real online time, that is very useful tool when you shoot an international wedding for example and some of the guests where not able to attend the wedding, but they want to see the wedding and even participate in the wedding via programs like skype. 5Photography, Film Making, Making a living Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 Skype Alexander.Gurman New Nikon D7100 camera for example offer that wireless capacity with the use of your smart phone with the internet to upload videos and pictures directly anywhere you want on the internet practically in real time. 32.Projecting your work at the wedding right away. It a great addition to a wedding process when pictures that have been taken earlier during the day where projected on the wall shortly later to show guest what they look on the big screen. Just make sure that you avoid embracing pictures to publish like that, please be modest. 33.Model Mayhem accounts Model Mayhem is a website that has a leading role in modeling business for beginners in the industry, this one of the most popular destinations for models and photographers to find each other. It is specifically design for that purpose. In order to open account currently it requires to submit for the judges consideration at least 4 photographs of the at least 2 different models from at least 2 locations, and maximum you can submit when you apply 15 photos. Just follow the process, read instructions and requirements, follow the direction and shortly you will get an account. 34.Working with Models. Being a photographer and working in the business for a while I can say that models are as humans as any one of us, of course there are some exceptions and squish toward narcissistic character, on order to be a model person should love to take her/his pictures all the time, willing to sacrifice on favorite food. Burn on the sun and damage her/his eyes from the flash lights, freeze from cold in the winter shoots. Be willing to stand in particular position for hours. Work with not always pleasant people but genially pretend to look happy on camera. Models have certain reputation in sub cultures so models should be willing to put up with those rumors and have tough skin for criticisms. Many models react well to flattery, to cover and few pay attention to the substance. Many models are muddy and require fast action, because one day they want to be in the photo shoot and another day not want to be in. One day they willing to come for the shoot and next day they change their mind. Models mode depends on the behavior of their boyfriends and girlfriends. I would suggest to be direct and upfront, be prepared, have respect to models time. If you have everything ready for the meeting upfront, they feel important, because at the end of the day they sell their time modeling and want to make as much money and fashion and art as possible in the short time that life gift them with beauty and interest to their face and body from the potential advertisers and clients. Show your credentials, if what you offer is credible you might get better response. Have accommodations ready. Have Make up and hair people available Have food and snack available 6Photography, Film Making, Making a living Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 Skype Alexander.Gurman Have the right music and location available Offer to provide transportation. 35.Working with clients Fight now what you are getting paid for exactly, find what pictures your clients need, and find out what there budget and how far this budget can be stretched or squished. Sign contract, get a deposit. 36.Elderly person photography. Elderly people do not like their pictures to be take in general because they feel the picture will show how old are they especially woman. Not all woman, some actually want to leave a legacy for grandchildren and want to leave some serious pictures for the death stone, some feel they took too many pictures during their life and do not want to pose. The secret is to make them feel engage and show them what you can do for them. Show them that on picture they will look dignified and generally good. Elderly people have wonderful facial expressions with of wisdom. Their eyes do not lie. Pay attention to the eyes, get the essence of their soil and you will have interesting picture. Because they may pass away any day those pictures can worth money later on for the heirs and those pictures age really fast. 37.Shooting animals legal points Animals are difficult to shoot even more difficult than children, they have short attention spin. You can not use flash light with dogs that are about to perform in the show ring. I find that little peace of paper that scratch in my pocket brings more expression in the dog or cat face. Loud noises do not really help just distract animals Shooting squirrel from the distance might require some long lenses or patience and some nuts so squirrel come to you. Shooting birds during flight and sitting Again sudden movements do scare birds, try to move slowly and in not threading way. Camophlash cloth may help or even camo over the camera in trench. Have patience, have tripod, because it is tough to hold heavy camera without movement for a long time. 38.Under water photography. Cost One of the most expensive tools for photographer because cases do leak and destroy cameras, many cases are camera specific and mostly allows you to shot in auto mode because it tough to change all the time settings under water. Perhaps pool with water for models in dresses is wonderful place to start in controlled environment before going on the river or in the ocean. 39.Helicopter and air plain photography. Cost 7Photography, Film Making, Making a living Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 Skype Alexander.Gurman Becomes more and more popular to shoot, produce wonderful film making process, a bit noisy and can fall with your camera or get lost somewhere but more and more becomes affordable, you can get starting helicopter from 100 dollars or even less. 40.Sports Photography. Sport Photography requires fast shooting. Moment can be gone really fast in mili second. Needs to shoot really fast and be on stand by hours. 41.Photo shop your work Photo shoop and correl are great programs as well as many other programs that help you to work on your art. The more you know the more you can do. Get a manual, sit and keep working and eventually you will learn. 42.Re touching your work cost of out sourcing One way of dealing with re touching your work is to outsource it to others. You can send work to people over email and they will do work for you for much less cost than local folks can do it. The key is proper requesting what you need and way of checking the results. 43.Business of photography. There are few avenues where business of photography can take you. a. you can make money by charging your clients in that case models for photography and portfolio so to say b. You can sell pictures to magazines and publications c. You can make websites and sell advertising on your site, using incoming traffic to watch your pictures d. You can charge costume designers and fashion designers for product placement and for photography of their work. Mostly they are not interested in paying money out of pocket. e. Sell pictures to stock photography f. Get an assignment to shoot something like news or paparazzi work g. 44. Safeguarding your photos, making copies, another back up hard drive. I would recommend having changing passwords on your computer and your camera and on your hard disk and keep your discs 45.Ad to look for model What you look for, size, age, and other parameters What you pay? Conditions You can put ad at craigslist, Model Mayhem, local news paper When to shoot, What is provided, make up and hair 8Photography, Film Making, Making a living Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 Skype Alexander.Gurman Who are photographers? What is the theme of the shoot? 46.Ad to look for photographer When the shoot would take place How long it takes What equipment used Who owns the rights? 47.Ad to look for hair and make up Compensation, reasons to participate in the shoot, credits, potential for hair and make up people. 48.Letter to fashion designer Tell them what you can do for them, why they have to lend you their products. What you can capture for them, how you will promote the image with their product. 49.Brochure to give out to public What you do? What is price policy? What are the reasons to work with you? What is the spectrum of services? How to contact you? 50.Business card layout Your name, your business name, your website, your phone, email, mm account, skype, your picture your mission, your address to send mail 51.Best practices What are the best practices? 52.Where to buy equipment www.rythercamera.com www.bandh.com www.jandr.com amazon.com ebay.com 53.Where not to buy equipment Shady dealers, ebay.com with no or little feedback. 54.Best photographers known to me Anthon Oparin, Nikolai Komisarov, Valera, Dmitry, Sveta Holovko Sveta, Alexandra 55.Modeling prices currently Most of models would be happy with rate from 75 dollars to 150 per hour. 9Photography, Film Making, Making a living Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 Skype Alexander.Gurman Most girls are not interested in your photo shoot discussion. They want their time to be paid and that is it. If model is new to the business you might get her to work for trade of for the files. Or if the shoot is for major magazine than models might want to work with you or if you are really famous photographer and girls want to work next to you. 56.Photographer pricing and common agreements I would say that cheap photographers may start as cheap as 25 dollars per hour if you give them at least 8 hour day paid, Normal pricing starts at 750 a day. Full time job in Brooklyn starts from 30 per year with benefits and total package can start at 50K per year. Most of the photographers are not totally booked so they try to charge as much as possible for little jobs they get in order to collect for the time when they are not working. 57.Skype order of business You can do a lot of business remote via skype and email and phone. You need good connections and prior agreements and than it can work. People who order work over skype usually are quite cheap and price sensitive because they use free skype so they do not want to spend on anything. Some work is still cheaper to do remotely rather than 58.Outsourcing for foreign TV station There are times when to send reporter and camera crew is not possible, because of the budget or weather conditions and TV stations would need a report from location where you locate. Like in my case I live in NYC, there is always something happening here. And the key is to find tv stations that can not afford a professional crew on stand by in NYC at all times and to be in the right place with camera to produce decent report. Then everything else is just technicality, price for how much you sell your work? How to ship report? Drop box is an easy solution, not that much with large files but than there is express mail and Fedex for that. 59.Who to hold your reflectors when you shoot. I ask strangers by standers, other models, people relevant to models, tripods, trees, have many holders and peaces of rope just in case. By giving other photographers to hold the reflector you stop them from shooting at the same time and get yourself extra help. People who shoot at the same time as you, are a distraction for your shoot, by giving them reflector to hold you prevent them from damaging your shoot. Have few extra reflectors to give out, it works especially great at the event photography and wedding photography when everyone with a phone thinks they are better photographers than you. 60.Outline of invitation to photo shoot what to mention a. What to bring 10Photography, Film Making, Making a living Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 Skype Alexander.Gurman b. What not to bring c. If chaperon is coming with model d. Conditions e. Location f. Time g. Who will participate h. What exactly we will do i. Remedies if they do not come j. Charge phone battery k. Print directions 61.What to bring to the shoot to give out to models (directions to the shoot, charge phone, portable phone charges) 62.What to bring with you to the photo shoot Cloth, string, high heels, cosmetics, cream, prokladki, tower, 63.Contract with bride and groom Had to be signed up front, better to have original signature and copy of id Up front deposit to clear, not paypal or check that can bounce or give time after you receive it deposit and make sure it does not balance. 64.Getting ready, preparations Have extra model releases available Have extra property releases available Have a few extra pens to write Have your bag with batteries, spare cameras, lights, tripods, sound, umbrellas, reflectors, charges, Dress fancy for the shoot, you will get more respect that way perhaps. Dress with care and paying attention to details, shave for men, groom yourself and make up for ladies, than your targets would want also to look a par. 65.Driving to photo shoot Have navigation system with you even if you know where to go, just in case, print address, research online where you going, if there is roads closed or some thing like parade is on your way that can prevent you from getting on time. 66.Transporting equipment in the rain, cold, hot weather, and damage in the airport. When you package your camera, use bubbles, and other protection so it would not get wet or get stolen, or broken. 67.How to get Sponsors Make a brochure, place advertising in craigslist.net, ebay, amazon, local news papers, websites, model mayhem website, give out fliers, talk to people. 68.Supporting your photographers. 11Photography, Film Making, Making a living Alexander@AlexGurman.com 917 825 8225 MM#3151176 Skype Alexander.Gurman If you are lead photographers who organize the shoot and you invite other photographers to participate you can show your appreciation by supporting them. Promote their work, give them credit, give them guidance, share documents that can benefit those photographers. 69.Barter TFP Trades, are good for beginners and cheap budgets, I prefer to pay straight out all my fees and own the work and have no partners to report to. That is not always the case when money are short. Also problem with paying for everything in full is that once they left there is no way the model will come back and re shoot for free. Models when you pay them only care that time pass and they look good at the pictures. They do not much care for the final result if the picture sells and accomplish what its purpose is. Sometimes model has to look not at her best but that can benefit the product in advertising at the shoot. If you have model interested in percentage of the final work than she/he will work to get the shoot a success. 70.What is going on during the shoot? a. We do beautiful pictures b. We work on the concept c. We try to have everyone to work together even if people meet who are un familiar to each other d. We sign what needs to be signed with the parties. e. We make sure that we do not damage or loose our equipment. f. We watch for safety of the model, not to get an injury during the shoot. 71.You can sell your photography and films at the Amazon.com and Ebay.com People buy for different reasons and you have to appeal to those reasons. Some buy for the feedback on ebay.com and than the key is to sell over 500 copies per day of each picture electronic delivery than, it becomes a bit profitable. People buy for the backdrop, for the back stage. People can order their specific pictures. 72.This book requires more editing and better writing as you may see, I am looking for photographers, models and other participating professionals in the field to collaborate with me in improving this book and marketing this book as well as placing advertising in this book. You are welcome to help me to write it, edit and market it. I am also looking for the advertisement to be placed in the book. 73.I am looking for assistant photographers who willing to participate in writing and editing and pro
