The Zaouli mask, used in dance, was created in the 1950s, supposedly inspired by a girl named "Djela Lou Zaouli" (meaning "Zaouli, daughter of Djela"). There are, however, other versions of the origin of the mask, and possibly each mask may have its own symbolic history. Each Guro village has its own dancer Zaouli (always male).
