Scout

The person who finds new faces and brings them to an agency, paid a fee or a percentage by that agency.

What they are looking for

Not beauty but a type and a set of proportions — what particular agencies need right now. Which is why a scout walks past the obviously striking and stops someone who thinks of herself as ordinary. The place hardly matters: Naomi Campbell was spotted in a shop, Kate Moss at an airport.

What a real approach looks like

The scout names the agency they work for, leaves a contact, and asks for simple pictures — no makeup, no retouching. The decision after that belongs to the agency, not to them.

A real scout takes no money: not for a viewing, not for a portfolio, not for a “registration fee”. They are paid by the agency, and only once the model starts working.

How to check in five minutes

Look up the agency they named and confirm it exists and that this person works there. Write to the agency directly through its official site — it costs nothing and settles the question immediately. Ask models already signed there whether they know the name.

If you are asked to pay

The conversation ends there. Schemes that take money up front disguised as a shoot, a course or paperwork are covered in «Casting Red Flags: A Working Safety Checklist».

If the agency says yes

You are invited in, polaroids are taken on the spot, measurements are recorded. Then come first tests and a composite card — at the agency’s expense or against future fees, and that question is worth asking straight away.
