Photo model

A model who works in front of a camera rather than on a runway: editorial, catalogue, advertising and music video work.

How it differs from runway work

Height decides less than photogeny and the ability to hold a character. A camera returns something quite different from what the eye sees: a face that is striking in life may not read in a frame, and the reverse happens just as often. It is a skill that is built, not a property you are born with.

There is more work in this segment and the competition is gentler: a client does not need one rare type to fit a sample, they need someone their audience recognises.

What you need to be able to do

Hold a pose and adjust it in small increments on command. Work with the face without pulling faces. Know where the light is and how a five-centimetre turn changes the shadow. And last a long day: eight hours of shooting is heavier than it sounds.

Anything that trains the body helps — dance, sport, acting.

How people start

With plain frames that show the face and figure as they are, then with test shoots across genres, which is how range is assembled — «A Portfolio From Zero, on Zero Budget».

On working the face in front of a lens — «Emotion on Camera: A Face That Doesn't Read as Posed».

Who lasts longest here

There is almost no age ceiling: advertisers need faces of every age, and a photo model’s career carries on comfortably after a runway one has finished.
