The person assembling the line-up for a show, a shoot or a campaign: they run the casting and decide who reaches the final list.
Who they work for
The designer or the brand — not the agency and not you. Their job is a line-up that solves the client’s problem: the right number of exits, a mix of faces, bodies the samples fit. Which is why a no usually means you did not match the brief, not that something is wrong with you.
What they are holding in mind
Height and proportions against the samples, the walk, how faces sit together in a single exit, and the rhythm of the show as a whole. Separately: reliability. Will this person turn up on time, survive a night fitting, not cancel on the last day.
Reputation travels fast here. There are not many casting directors, they work for several houses at once, and they compare notes.
How the meeting goes
Four minutes: composite and a greeting, polaroids on the spot, a walk, measurements. There is almost no conversation, and silence is not a judgement — «The Casting Room, Minute by Minute».
What is actually up to you
Arriving on time and looking like someone who can be pictured in the collection: clean face, hair down, simple clothes, heels you can walk in. The rest is not your department — the line-up is built around garments that were cut before you arrived.
And not trying to charm. A casting director sees dozens of people in a row, and what registers is composure, not conversation.
