An appearance that breaks the usual symmetry: wide-set eyes, an unusual mouth, abrupt proportions. One feature is normally far stronger than the rest and carries the whole face.
How to tell whether it is your type
You have been described through a single detail your whole life — “those eyes”, “that mouth”. Photographs come out either very well or completely wrong, with little in between. At school the look was called strange; after twenty the same people started calling it special.
What work it brings
High fashion, editorial, designer shows, campaigns for brands that want character. Scouts look for these faces more actively than for regular ones: a memorable face works in a frame on its own, without makeup or staging, and regular faces are in surplus.
What to shoot for the book
The plainest frames possible: even light, clean background, no makeup. Your distinctive feature has to be visible without help — if the frame is carried by styling, you are showing the stylist rather than yourself.
Never “correct” that feature with retouch or angle. It is the reason you get booked; an evened-out face turns instantly into one of a thousand.
How it differs from the others
A strong face is a regular face with powerful structure; a strange look is a face with broken proportion, and that is the entire difference. The textbook example is Lindsey Wixson.
